KCRC Resolution on Justice for Presidential Electors

A Resolution by the Kent County Republican Committee
for Justice for the Republican Presidential Electors

WHEREAS, the Federal Election Law requires each state major political party to elect electors to certify the vote of President of the United States; and,

WHEREAS, the Presidential Elector is a position often awarded to someone that has dedicated their lives to public service for their state and country; and,

WHEREAS, the Michigan Republican Party at its August 2020 State Convention elected the following 16 Presidential Electors, Kathy Berden, William (Hank) Choate, Amy Facchinello, Clifford Frost, Stanley Grot, John Haggard, Mary-Ann Henry, Timothy King, Michele Lundgren, Meshawn Maddock, James Renner, Mayra Rodriguez, Rose Rook, Marian Sheridan, Ken Thompson, Kent Vanderwood; and,

WHEREAS, the 2020 election in Michigan was hectic due to COVID and many lawsuits were filed challenging the Presidential results; and,

WHEREAS, in December 2020 the Michigan Republican Electors met and followed the advice from several  attorneys as those attorneys approved a form that could have been used if the courts reversed the Presidential results after their meeting; and,

WHEREAS, Attorney General Nessel decided two years after the election to prosecute the 16 Presidential Electors in Michigan because their form was inaccurate causing the electors to be potentially subject to years in prison; and,

WHEREAS, on July 18, 2023, Attorney General Nessel charged each Michigan Republican Presidential Elector/Defendant with one count of Conspiracy to Commit Forgery, a 14-year felony, two counts of Forgery, a 14-year felony, one count of Conspiracy to Commit Uttering and Publishing, a 14-year felony, one count of Uttering and Publishing, a 14-year felony, one count of Conspiracy to Commit Election Law Forgery, a 5-year felony, and, two counts of Election Law Forgery, a 5-year felony. MI AG Dept. Media Release; and, 

WHEREAS, the 2020 Michigan Republican Presidential Electors have been forced to hire criminal attorneys at their own expense causing them to go into debt for tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars; and,

WHEREAS, on October 19, 2023, James Renner, had his charges dropped after it was announced he had entered into a cooperating agreement with AG Nessel; and,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Kent County Republican Committee recognizes that the prosecution of the remaining 15 Presidential Electors is at the ‘discretion’ of the Attorney General and it appears that it is being done for political reasons; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Kent County Republican Committee strongly urges the Michigan Legislature to take the necessary steps to cause the Attorney General to withdraw this prosecution for the sake of justice.
